As another year ticks by, the team at YTM is proud to be celebrating the company’s 36th birthday. Like every year since 1981 it has been a busy and eventful 12 months at our headquarters in West Yorkshire. With new additions to the YTM team, new product ranges nearing completion and exciting collaborations and a successful relaunch of our four websites, the foundations are now in place for a stellar 2018.
We caught up with YTM’s Founder and Chairman, Pat Duffy, to explain how we came to this point.
Established in West Yorkshire 36 years ago in November 1981, the company now known as YTM started its journey as the “Yorkshire Timber Manufacturing”. As the company grew and diversified the name was changed in 2009 to what we now know as YTM Group.
“It started by accident,” says Pat Duffy.
As the Sales and Marketing Manager for Crosby Kitchens and Doors, Pat was left unable to work after a serious car accident on December 1st 1980. After some time off Pat decided to set up his own joinery company, took out a lease on a warehouse in Pontefract and the rest, as they say, is history.
Once a seller and distributor of kitchens, the business quickly identified new opportunities and evolved into a more diverse furniture business. Pat says:
“We are design led, which means that we are always looking to create innovative new designs. That’s important because it means that we don’t stand still and simply produce furniture that is acceptable. We are committed to pushing the boundaries and doing more.
“But we also care about our customers. We pay attention to what they want, what they need and the feedback they give us on projects. As a family business, we value trust and communication. I’m proud to say that this is reflected in the nucleus of loyal customers who have now worked with us for many years. Earning repeat business from those we have built a relationship with is a testament to the hard work done behind the scenes by our team.”
Back in 1984 there were less than 10 members of staff at Yorkshire Timber Manufacturing. But with the miners’ strikes came the decision to diversify into other markets, providing high quality contract furniture. This diversification provided much-needed employment opportunities in the local community at a time when the industrial landscape was changing fast.
As the business progressed, YTM established a reputation for combining comfort, luxury and functionality in their products. Along the way, a number of esteemed clients turned to YTM, including royalty and very high profile international business leaders.
Today, YTM employs over 140 people. Although the client base has expanded and the business has diversified into the hospitality and student sectors, the company retains its family-run ethos and takes its responsibilities within the local community very seriously.
